Extreme Ownership

If you don’t know who Jocko Willink is, you are in for a treat. Jocko is who comes to mind when you hear about someone who doesn’t mince words. He shows you what speaking directly and assertively means.

If you don’t know anything about Jocko He was Enlisted and an officer of the US Navy. He was also a Navy Seal and his very presence commands respect.

In this week’s video, Jocko Willink talks about a day in Ramadi Iraq where there was a case of friendly fire. He talks about the life that was lost, the men that were hurt, and who was to blame. He had many of his own men try to take ownership of what happened. Yet that wasn’t who was at fault. The man at fault was Him.

With that realization, he expected to get fired but because he owned up to his part of the scenario, He wasn’t fired. He wasn’t reprimanded. simply because he owned up to what he did wrong. He took full responsibility for his being the commanding officer on the field and things went wrong on his watch.

Because of this, he was trusted more by his higher-ups and also by his men. His men respected him more because they knew he wouldn’t throw them under the bus. He wouldn’t point a finger just to get been. Jocko because a better leader and lead by example to his men under him.

This TED has massive amounts of power and it’s not all because a powerful man is talking.
