What to Look For In a Backpack

This weeks video is a step away from the thoughts of connection and self love. It is the end of the month again and so we are getting outside.

REI has a great video that talks about backpacks and how to choose a good pack for those who want a nice weekend hike or an extended winter hike.

Our educator in the video is Miranda with the REI co-op.

Sizes or capacity to choose

The sizes vary from small day packs to large multi day hiking trips. The difference depends on how much you want to carry. If you are ultralight then you will be carrying less stuff. While winter hikers will have more items to carry because they have more layers and other gear they may need.

Frame Types

Do you want a frameless or with a frame? A frame does the work of putting the weight off of your shoulders and moving that load to your hips. Your back and shoulders will thank you if you do carry a good bit of weight.

Then if you decide to get a frame pack then you want to decide if you want an internal frame or and external frame.

Internals are more compact but external frames allow for you to carry bulkier items because you can tie these extra parts to the frame itself.

Other Features

There are many different features you can have for your pack. From cushion thickness to lashing points. There are detachable lids, and attached day packs. So when looking for a bag look at the options.

So this gives you a good over view of packs so as you look through the winter you can find the type that will make your trips the best possible.
